Professor Coo’s book which revolves around the themes of clothes, fashion, civilization, cultural standards, and evolution was published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press in 2019.
08 September 2021, Lisbon - Stephanie Marie Coo, Assistant Professor with the Department of History of the Ateneo de Manila University and currently a postdoctoral Marie Curie fellow at the NOVA School of Law, in Lisbon, Portugal and the University of Granada, in Granada, Spain, was awarded the prestigious International Best Book Prize 2021 in Humanities, English Language Edition for her book entitled “Clothing the Colony: Nineteenth-Century Philippine Sartorial Culture – 1820-1896”.
Out of the total 497 books that were submitted of which is 247 from the humanities section and the only one from Asia to be shortlisted, Professor Coo’s book was awarded under the International Convention of Asian Scholars (ICAS), a biennial meeting platform of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) initiative, a consortium of universities hosted by the Leiden University in Netherlands that connects scholars, academic practitioners and institutions throughout the world to discuss and exchange knowledge and ideas about Asia and Asian Studies in a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral context.

As a fellow Negrense, Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Celia Anna M. Feria is proud and honored to have worked and partnered with Professor Coo in promoting the rich and diverse culture of the Philippines in Portugal. In 2017 Dr. Stephanie Coo delivered a lecture entitled “Philippine Women’s Clothing: Problematizing Class, Appearances and Colonialism” at Museu do Oriente in Lisbon. The Philippine Embassy in Portugal, through Professor Coo’s network and contacts, was able to partner and engage with Portuguese scholars and esteemed academic institutions for the Embassy’s ongoing cultural programs and activities that highlight our common histories and common narratives with Portugal.
