FILIPINO SOPRANO DUO, THE NIGHTINGALES RECEIVES STANDING OVATION AT THE BASILICA DE ESTRELA IN LISBON

31 MAY 2024 - Famed Filipino soprano duo, The Nightingales, received a standing ovation at its second concert in Portugal entitled The Nightingales in Lisbon, organized by the Philippine Embassy in Portugal, in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

The intricate design and grand façade of the renowned Basilica da Estrela served as the backdrop to the concert of the Nightingales in Lisbon on 28 May 2024.

The Nightingales received a resounding standing ovation, from the distinguished guests including the Apostolic Nuncio, members of the diplomatic corps, Portuguese locals, members of the Filipino community, and visitors of the Basilica.

In his opening remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Paul Raymund P. Cortes highlighted the Embassy's continuous efforts in raising the level of awareness of the Philippines through the universal language of music. He underlined the significance of sharing Philippine culture with the Portuguese community to enrich deeper understanding and enhance people-to-people linkages between Filipinos and Portuguese.

Ms. Bianca Lopez and Ms. Bernadette Mamauag, accompanied by the esteemed Portuguese Maestro Nuno Margarido Lopes on the piano, showcased their musical prowess through a repertoire of sacred songs, traditional Philippine folk music, a medley of compositions by National Artist Ryan Cayabyab, and a Portuguese folk song, "A Roupa Do Marinheiro." 

The two concerts of the Nightingales in Portugal are a result of the partnership between the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to provide an inclusive cultural experience and immersion showcasing the exceptional talent of Filipino artists through music and word-class performances.
