Philippines Seeks Stronger Tourism Ties with Guinea-Bissau
15 January 2025, Bissau – In an effort to enhance bilateral cooperation in tourism, Philippine Ambassador Paul Raymund P. Cortes had an introductory meeting with Minister Alberto Demba Turé of the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts of Guinea-Bissau on 15 January 2025 at the Palacio do Governo in Bissau. The Ambassador expressed his appreciation for Minister Turé’s interest in exploring collaborative opportunities, recognizing the significant potential of the tourism sector for both countries.
Ambassador Cortes highlighted the importance of tourism in the Philippines’ economy, which directly contributed to 12.7% of the country’s GDP in 2019, supporting millions of jobs in hospitality, transportation, and other sectors. He also highlighted the Philippines' commitment to sustainable tourism, particularly through initiatives like eco-tourism and community-based tourism to preserve natural and cultural heritage.
Minister Turé highlighted Guinea-Bissau’s potential in tourism, especially with its Bijagos Islands, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. However, he noted challenges in infrastructure, including ports and roads, which hinder tourism development. He shared plans for a national tourism school and eco-tourism projects, including in the Bijagós Islands, and expressed interest in collaborating with the Philippines for training and infrastructure support. Ambassador Cortes proposed a webinar to discuss tourism development and suggested sharing best practices, particularly in sustainable tourism. Both parties agreed to continue exploring cooperation, with Minister Turé offering to share promotional materials and Ambassador Cortes committing to further discussions to advance the collaboration.
The meeting marks the beginning of what both sides hope will be a lasting partnership in tourism. Ambassador Cortes expressed optimism that this collaboration would promote mutual economic growth, cultural exchange, and environmental sustainability, benefiting both nations in the long term. END
