Philippines Participates in São Toméan President’s New Year’s Diplomatic Reception
20 February 2025, São Tomé – Following his presentation of credentials as Non-Resident Philippine Ambassador to São Tomé and Príncipe, His Excellency Paul Raymund P. Cortes attended the New Year’s Diplomatic Reception hosted by President Carlos Manuel Vila Nova on 20 February 2025 at the Palacio do Povo.
Ambassador Cortes had the opportunity to meet the diplomatic community of São Tomé and Príncipe, headed by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Her Excellency Deontina Carvalho, Ambassador of Cabo Verde. The Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities, Her Excellency Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz of São Tomé and Príncipe, was also present at the event.
In his speech, President Carlos Manuel Vila Nova informed the diplomatic community about São Tomé and Príncipe’s view on certain international developments such as the ongoing conflicts in Africa, particularly in Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and the Horn of Africa. President Vila Nova described these wars as “largely hidden from the daily press and do not agitate international actors as is the case with other conflicts,” making it a “reflection of the unequal world to which we belong.”
President Vila Nova also urges all key players in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to seize the current window of opportunity for inclusive dialogue and lasting peace, respecting international law to prevent the resurgence of the conflict. Similarly, he expressed hope that the current ceasefire in the Middle East will not be interrupted.
As an island state vulnerable to the effects of climate change, the President also entreated the diplomatic community to reflect on progress, renew commitments to address climate change, and ensure the survival of our planet and humanity.
“Our expectation is that all political leaders maintain serenity and discernment, the spirit of international cooperation and concertation with a view to being able to converge on the most important issues for our collective life,” said the President. He further hoped that “that the year 2025 will bring an end to the crises that have dominated international politics and that nations will be able to work harmoniously towards the progress of all human beings.” END
